Dr. Roy Horovitz

Chair of the artistic committee, Isra-Drama and The International Exposure of Israeli Theatre

Dear Guests,
I’m delighted to welcome you to Isra-Drama and International Exposure of Israeli Theatre 2021.
Covid-19 is still around, but who knows better than we theatre folk that "the show must go on"? So once again, we're going fully online and we’re fully committed to bringing you the best Israeli theatre has to offer – written plays, a variety of shows, fascinating stage languages, new and innovative formats, and so much more. As always, our mission remains to set in motion a fresh, direct dialogue between you and our local artistic creators; to provide you the opportunity to obtain a broad view of Israeli theatre, its unique nature and aesthetic, and find partners for future collaborations.

To achieve this, our rich program is composed of three types of events:

1. Thirteen full-length productions, all available to you online prior to the actual event, to watch at your convenience.

2. Five panels that encompass the most pressing issues our theatre is facing today, among them: Transformance – Getting Inspired by Different Mediums; Post-Traumatic Theatre – Shifting Defects into Effects; The Intensification of Feminine Voices On and Off Stage; Staging Israeli Drama around the World; and others.
Each panel includes an online discussion with a group of experts and artists, who will present scenes from their works and share their thoughts and perspectives on the subject at hand.

3. One-on-one Zoom meetings – to provide multiple opportunities for encounters, we have created a special time-slot system that will allow you to chat with artists you found intriguing during the 4-day event.

So kick off your slippers, put on your best pajama pants, pour yourself a nice cold beer, and start planning for the day after the pandemic.

This convention could not have come to fruition if not for the hard work and devotion of the members of the Artistic Committee, as well as our good friends at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture and Sport – all dedicated and creative people with a passion for theatre, especially during these troubled times.

Last year's Isra-Drama proved to be a very positive and fruitful experience. We all did our best to maintain its high standards and success. Still, may the next time we meet be in person and in Israel, when the only masks we see are where they truly belong: on stage, rather than on the audience.

Enjoy!

Dr. Roy Horovitz,
Chair, Artistic Committee, Isra-Drama & International Exposure of Israeli Theatre

The Hanoch Levin Institute of Israeli Drama

Dear Guests,
Every year we invite some 60 artistic directors and theatre professionals from 25 countries to come to Tel Aviv to see performances, meet Israeli theatre professionals face to face, and enjoy the beauty of Tel Aviv’s landscapes, and the vibrant creative energy of the city that never sleeps.

After holding all the Isra-Drama and International Exposure events online in 2020, we really hoped to be able to welcome you here in Israel. But reality has its own ideas, and we will meet on screen this year too. There are, however, some significant advantages. Many of you are planning your repertoires for the coming years, or hesitant regarding plays that were postponed in 2020, struggling with rules and regulations, wondering whether the audience will go back to purchasing tickets as it did in the past, and hoping that theatres remain open and can host a full house.

If last year the general mindset was “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade”, now it is “Covid-19 is here to stay, and we need to coexist with it”.

What will theatre look like in the coming years? Will it become virtual? Will screens replace a face-to-face encounter with the audience? Or, as in past plagues throughout our history – we will recover and return to the theatres?

You can think of our event as an opportunity to find interesting content, meet new creators, have a good time, and find inspirational ways to collaborate.

One thing is certain – the theatre world has become a global network where we meet, discuss, swap experiences, and discover that we have a shared destiny.

May we all meet again in Tel Aviv.

Yours,

Shimrit Ron, Director
Noam Semel, Chairman
The Hanoch Levin Institute of Israeli Drama

Hili Tropper

Minister of Culture and Sport

Dear Guests,
I am happy and delighted to welcome you to the opening of Isra-Drama: International Exposure of Israeli Theatre 2021, a project for promoting the exposure of Israeli theatre and drama to directors of notable festivals and cultural institutions around the world. Thank you for joining the performances and discussion panels, and the challenging discourse being conducted by Israeli theatre and drama.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year too, we are obliged to hold all the events online, using digital means of communication. The global crisis compels us to contend with new challenges for the consumption of culture and the arts to continue.
As you know, the theatre phenomenon in Israel is quite extraordinary, some even say unparalleled, in the world. Every year, hundreds of original Israeli dramas and translated plays are transformed into shows that are performed thousands of times on stages in cultural centers and theatres all over the country. Shows produced by theatres and theatre groups and ensembles from Israel’s central region, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, from Beer Sheva in the south to Haifa in the north, repertory plays, and fringe productions.
Isra-Drama is a joint Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture and Sport initiative, and is produced by the Hanoch Levin Institute of Israeli Drama. The success of the International Exposure events in recent years has resulted in an impressive number of interesting collaborations and invitations from numerous festival directors and theatres around the world, including the US, South America, Europe, South Africa, East Asia, and others.
The staff at the Ministry of Culture, and the Theatre and Fringe Departments at the Israeli Council of Culture and Art, who accompany the wonderful Isra-Drama project, anticipate and hope that the International Exposure events will continue to yield fruit in a mutually beneficial dialogue in the coming years as well, despite the global Covid-19 crisis.
Due to the packed program, it is impossible to show you all that Israeli theatre has to offer. We hope in the not-too-distant future to be able to welcome you to Israel, where the sun shines all year round, to attend in-person performances, and enjoy a memorable theatre experience.
Thank you to the staff of the Institute of Israeli Drama, to the Artistic Committee, and to everyone involved in organizing the events, all of whom have contributed to the success of Isra-Drama: International Exposure of Israeli Theatre 2021.
Sincerely,

Hili Tropper
Minister of Culture and Sport

Mr. Yair Lapid

Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs

Hello everybody,
In my previous life, I wrote plays for the "Habima" National Theater and the "Cameri" Theater.

I come from a family of theater lovers, my dad wrote Noel Coward style comedy;  My mom is a well-known playwright, who wrote hugely successful social dramas; my Niece is an actress in the "Gesher" Theater and my second niece just started acting in a famous theater in Tel-Aviv.
In our family, when we say, “break a leg” we all go to the hospital.

That is why, this program is so important to me personally. Israeli theater is Israeli culture, Israeli humor, the drama of our lives. When you see and understand Israeli theater –  you truly understand us. Not just the pictures in the news, but the heart and soul of Israeli society.

I would like to thank the "Hanoch Levin" institute for Israeli drama for putting on such a wonderful program, despite the uncertainty caused by covid-19. The artistic comity and its Chair,  Dr. Roy Horovitz, for your dedicated work putting together such a great program with a verity of high quality works. And of course, to the wonderful team of KASHTUM, the Division of Cultural and Scientific Affairs Of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who work tirelessly to promote cultural relations.

I wish everyone a healthy winter and a speedy return to routine, I hope to see you all next year, in person, here in Israel, at ISRA-DRAMA 2022.
